HaverfordWest

Pembrokeshire is the most western county in Wales and at the heart of this unique corner of the Principality is Haverfordwest, the county town and centre of the county’s commercial, social and cultural life

Fay's Surgery

Fay lost the stone from one of her rings ... probably on the flight JFK-LHR... and we had some challenges finding a jeweller who would cut the ring ... or the finger off. Finally found a jeweller in Haverford West in Wales .. here are some graphic images of the operation !!

Saundersfoot

We went here for a last family meal at the Mermaid Restaurant .. over looking the harbour on a very foggy night

Saundersfoot used to be a small fishing village. There was also some shipbuilding here. In the 1800's Saundersfoot became very popular with the black gold rush when high quality anthracite was found locally. This coal was in demand and in 1829 a whole new harbour was built and railways shipped the coal to the harbour from six mines.
With the decline of coal sales and other more profitable coal mining operations both in the UK and abroad, the mining ceased and Saundersfoot became a popular tourist destination.
This is one of the most visited tourist resorts in Wales along with its equally if not more popular neighbour, the town of Tenby, some 3 miles away. The countryside and scenery is fabulous and the shopping and recreational facilities superb. Be sure to visit the fish market and the local butcher who has won several awards and sells the freshest and most succulent Welsh lamb that you will ever come across.

Pembroke Dock

Pembroke Dock is the main town closest to the village of Cosheston .. about 5 minutes by car

Before 1814 Pembroke Dock was known as Paterchurch and was little more than a small fishing village. The Royal Navy at Milford Haven decided to move their shipbuilding further inland from the mouth of the estuary and Paterchurch was selected as the most ideal location. This decision transformed Paterchurch into a town and the thriving dockyard produced a great number of ships before its closure in 1926.
In 1938 the dockyard, now under the Air Ministry, received its first Sunderland flying boat ( there's a little pub here called "The Flying Boat") and the flying boats operated from Pembroke Dock until as late as 1957. During the second world war it was the world's largest flying boat base.
Pembroke Dock today is a ferry port and with good mooring and watersport facilities for tourists. The Gun Tower Museum is a popular destination for those seeking historic information and it has a collection of military heritage displays and equipment.

Today - Shopping
Pembroke Dock being the newer town of the two, has the more space available and thus space availability. This is why Pembroke Dock has succeeded in bringing supermarkets to the area.
Again you will not find any high street electrical retailer here, you will have to go to Haverfordwest for this. However what we can find in Pembroke Dock is some very interesting shops from Tescos supermarket to Woolworths in Dimond Street, Pembroke Dock. Everything you would need can be found within Pembroke Dock within reason.

In the 1990s Pembroke Dock used to have a WH Smiths in the town, however they pulled out when the maintainance costs on the building they were occupying became to much, this building was then revamped and named Dickmans news agents, however a couple of years on this also closed, the store is now clintons cards.

Restaurants can also be found in the area which can be found within the Business Directory. Pembroke Dock was built to conteract the silting condition of the Port at Pembroke, and has grown ever since with a steady twice daily ferry bringing large amounts of traffic and with it much custom. Woolworths as mentioned earlier is present in Dimond Street, Pembroke Dock where you can get the latest music title, video, DVD or even toys.

On the route to Western Way Pembroke Dock (Between Tescos and the Ferry Port) in particular the Ferry Port Supermarkets have become a large number, featuring Tesco, ASDA, KWIKSAVE, and the German cut price food supermarket LIDL. Before 2005 the ASDA store was actually the CO-OP which was present for many years before, however the retailer struggled to compete for competition against Tesco since it arrived in Pembroke Dock, the store did attempt to fight back by introducing electricals and other items.

People have claimed that the arrival of such a large supermarket as Tescos has sent custom away from the town centre and thus is creating a downward spiral, this has yet to be seen. Also on the same park as Tescos is Focus Do It All, which sell anything from pets to concrete.
A very popular addition to Pembroke Dock came as a result of the success of its sister store in Haverfordwest by Pembroke Dock this is McDonalds which is on the same park as tescos and is successful partly due to the trade from Ferry traffic that passes by it when the ferry arrives twice daily, added to that the local interest of such a large multi-national.

Pembroke has a main post office in the centre where you can purchase car tax, cards, gifts and stamps, this is also the sorting office where undelivered parcels from the Pembroke, Pembroke Dock and surrounding areas can be picked up.

For the future of Pembroke Dock there have been rumors that a new Argos store will take it's place by Mc Donalds and Tesco, however this currently is little more than a rumor and nothing has yet been officially confirmed.
Neighbouring towns that have good shopping are Haverfordwest and Carmarthen, Pembroke Dock has good travel links to both of these towns with train and bus transport available.
